Age-related Macular Degeneration, Retinal Diseases and their Treatment

Age-related Macular Degeneration – a disease affecting the central part of the retina (the Macular) responsible for seeing fine detail. ‘Dry’ Age-related Macular Degeneration (ARMD) represents a “wear and tear”-like process whilst ‘Wet’ ARMD involves the abnormal growth of blood vessels causing leaking and bleeding in the Macular. Wet ARMD can be treated with the injection of drugs into the eye, including Eylea, Lucentis or Avastin.

Retinal Vein Occlusion – a blockage of a vein at the back of the eye disrupting the drainage from an area of the Retina. This leads to leakage and bleeding which interferes with the patient’s vision. This may be treated with various drugs and/or laser treatment.

Diabetic Retinopathy – diabetes can damage the blood vessels at the back of the eye causing leakage, bleeding and other serious complications. Treatments may involve certain drugs and laser procedures together with other more preventative measures.

Intra-vitreal Injections – the injection of drugs into the eye to control various retinal diseases.

Yag Capsulotomy – a laser treatment used following cataract surgery to improve the vision when clarity has been lost due to clouding of the bag holding the plastic lens.
